Treat your car like a queen and she will serve you like a King!
Monsoons have arrived again. It’s understood that during this season it becomes quite tricky to maintain your car properly as looking the condition we have in terms of infrastructure where water logged roads can be an everyday sight. Thus, to make things easier for you we at Solitaire Honda have come up with some of the basic servicing tips especially for your car maintenance during monsoons.
There’s always the possibility of heavy rain falls at any time of monsoon. Hence, to prepare your car for this kind of unwelcomed situation, it should be maintained properly. Especially, the brakes, steering system, tyre tread depth, steering system, tyre pressures and defroster operation should be checked regularly. The following tips will make sure that the rains are enjoyable for both you and your vehicle.
- Tyres - It is essential to make sure that tires are in good condition before monsoon arrives as they are constantly in contact with the surface. The tread pattern on your tyres is the single most important thing in the rains that can keep you safely on the roads. Rubber has a tendency to soften when coming in contact with water so one should check the tyre pressure regularly and inflate it to the pressure as recommended by the manufacturer. This regular servicing will not only ensure better driving comfort but good tyre life of your Honda Car as well.
- Wipers - During rainy season, your car's wipers become one of the most important parts as they have the big role to perform at that particular time. Check your wiper blades thoroughly before the monsoon starts. If they are found brittle or damaged, replace them as soon as possible, so that you would be ready even when it's raining. Also, make sure that your windscreen is sufficiently wet before using the wipers, since a dry wipe can cause unwanted scratches on the windscreen. Regular servicing of your car will include thorough check of wiper blades also.
- To be Meticulous - During monsoons, get those small scratches on the surface touched up, as you don't want your car metal exposed to come in contact with rain water and invite rusting. Also, getting an under-body rust treatment every couple of years is also a good idea.
- Wiper Blades and Motor - The most undervalued part of your vehicle becomes the most crucial part during monsoons. As the rubber on the wiper tends to harden up with time reducing its effectiveness. It is also important to check your wiper motor and make sure that it is working efficiently.
- Electronics - Water and electronics are never a good combination, hence get the wiring for the battery and the alternator checked for proper insulation. Ensure that while receiving the car after servicing, your car's headlights, indicator lights and tail lights are working properly, so that other drivers and pedestrians can see you under heavy rainfall.
- Lights: The lights which look fine in scanner may be insufficient in monsoon because wet roads absorb light and visibility suffers to a great extent. Lighting must be checked for brightness, correct pattern and perfect combination. Always use good quality bulbs. If inherently the lights are bad, do have auxiliary lights fitted, yellow lights give a better contrast.
- Mud Flaps: When you're driving during monsoon, what you leave behind your car is as important as what you're driving into. I bet no one likes driving behind a car that is spraying a lot of muddy water and, more importantly, that can be quite dangerous as well. Make sure you fit mud flaps on all four wheels before you start off.
- Brakes: Rain water moistens the brake drums which can cause lower braking efficiency. In order to avoid this, it is advisable to use the brake on and often. Keep the brakes well-oiled and do regular servicing of it. Keep an eye on the level of brake fluid. Check the brake fluids often and replace every two years or 50,000 kms or as requested by your car manual. Brake pads in good condition are a must to ensure effective braking. It's better to give your cars each brake pad for servicing frequently to ensure safety. While their average life is around 25.000 km, they can become blunt because of our stop and go traffic lifestyle easily before their recommended expiry date. Keep an eye on them and change them if necessary. Brake shoes should also be checked and changed regularly
Here's just another piece of advice from Solitaire Honda. Don't forget to keep a toolkit and spare wheel in your vehicle for safer side.
